RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as ISIS - established militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were thousands of British personnel on duty over the festive period. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the US military carried out what it called a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
